Faster than he had figured, word had traveled down the whole of the shopping district of Destiny Islands that Riku was looking for a gift for his mom.

That wasn't his fault... well, not exactly. It's not like he could've told the shop clerks that he was looking for a gift for his -- well, not really his -- for a girl he really liked because he was afraid he'd fucked up big time, and his shoddy Memories said that if you wanted to suck up to a girl big time, you had to provide gifts. And there was only so much staring into store window displays and cautiously poking at things on shelves before his bewildered expression gave him away and a shop clerk decided to question him and be 'helpful.' So, now everyone thought Riku was looking for something for his mom -- they were both female -- and he was still hopelessly confused.

One shop clerk told him that every woman liked chocolates. He thought about that -- chocolate was candy and candy was always good -- but once in the candy store, confronted with shining glass cases filled with row upon row of different chocolaty goodness (truffles? melts? mints?), he'd lost his nerve. He didn't even know if Namine liked chocolates, or which chocolates she liked, and another shop clerk had told him she didn't like getting chocolates because then she'd eat them all and get fat. He didn't want Namine to think that he was trying to make her fat.

One shop clerk suggested flowers were always a nice gift, perfect for any occasion. But getting a girl flowers -- especially to apologize -- usually meant roses, red ones, and that kind of flower made him remember Marluxia. He certainly didn't want to give Namine anything that might remind her of Marluxia. And anyway, flowers were an 'anytime' gift, and this wasn't an 'anytime' situation so he went on to the next store.

One shop clerk said that there was no better gift than jewelry, particularly diamonds, to really show you cared. But while he had munny, he wasn't that rich. And some part of him shied away at the thought of buying Namine jewelry, even diamonds, unless it was in a ring, but then he felt his face heat up, because certainly it had to be too soon for anything like that. WAY too soon. And he'd never seen Namine wear jewelry before, and couldn't quite recall if her ears were pierced or not, since he'd been too busy kissing her to notice little details like that.

One shop clerk offered to help him find some article of clothing to give as a gift. But he didn't know the first thing about buying clothes for girls, he didn't even know Namine's size, only the way she felt under his hands, and he certainly wasn't going to grope the shop clerk for comparison. And what if he picked something she hated? And it's not like he could buy Namine lingerie -- even if he did have to replace that pair of panties he had ripped -- because everyone still thought Riku was trying to buy his mom a gift, and buying panties would be weird. And creepy.

He'd spent the whole afternoon, prowling through store after store until his head was buzzing with 'helpful' advice and choices and options, and he still hadn't bought a single damn thing.. He was sure Namine had plenty of art supplies, so he couldn't buy her that. He'd heard Axel say she's gotten a new camera, so he couldn't buy her that. He liked the way Namine smelled -- like the sea and something clean and pure and Namine -- so he couldn't buy her perfume. He had absolutely no idea whatsoever on what to get her to apologize.

He was so fucked.
